The lovely still close-up shots to the gently moving handheld camera work look stunning. Furthermore, The opening visuals and the ending shots are as mesmerizing as any in cinematic history.
In particular, when Kirsten Dunst holds up her hands in the air while the planet strikes is maybe my favorite shot from any film. These special effects for the evaporating people as well as the planet Melancholia crashing into Earth is absolutely captivating.
The CGI and practical effects of Melancholia rival the very best film has to offer. The massive soundscape created gives Melancholia an epic feel as Trier frames his narrative with a rogue planet about to crash into the Earth.
You see this in the stylized slow motion introduction to the movie and it all leads up to the beautiful finale with perhaps the most breathtaking shot in any movie ever.
The music and cinematography all build suspense with a sense of foreboding that Trier capitalizes on with his stellar direction.
In all, Melancholia is so very human and relatable in a quiet world of its own. There aren't many out there who can honestly relate to and appreciate a film like this.
I am one of the people who did. I've been suffering from depression at varying levels for over a decade now and the way this film approaches the topic seems more than legit to me.
Every scene is meticulously paced and imaged, lingering where they should, even if you don't want them to. It is a very dark and dreary film, but one whose purpose it is to validate an experience.
The planet, aptly named Melancholia, is a representation of the looming yet terrifying nothingness that hovers over the heads of those who deal with depression.
It is inescapable, powerful, and destructive. The splitting of the film into two chapters allows us to see things from the viewpoint of depressed Justine and her older, anxious sister, Claire.
It is a brilliantly plotted story with wonderful acting. I would recommend this film to anyone who has ever been depressed as well as people who are close to those who have been or still are depressed.
It is an important, beautiful film. I could give this film 3 or 4 stars for the acting and effects, but I'd rather not give it a rating at all -- because ever since I watched it years ago I've never been able to get its "poison" for lack of a better word out of my head.
Not all viewers will be as sensitive to the sheer hopelessness depicted so unrelentingly in this extremely dark film, but please examine yourself in this regard before watching it.
I'd be a more happy and hopeful person today if I'd never watched it, so I wanted to give others a chance to avoid the damage this movie can do to your heart and soul.

I like all kind of movies, one could even say some I like are " outside the box" Machinist" ,"Magnolia" ,"Mulholland Drive" and Mother etc ,BUT this was just SLOW zzzzz, really pretentious ,it had just about zero story line OR a very simple one made out to look intelligent, ie the fact that K Dunst suffers from Melancholia and the Planet that's going towards earth is also called Melancholia, it could be said her Melancholia is attracting planet Melancholia.
BUT put simply it starts at the end so you know everyone's going to DIE, like I said its very SLOW, and what dialogue there is just doesn't grab ones attention, as I started off saying and will finish, Art for arts sake, very pretentious, dull, I know film is personal taste but its almost like having the right trendy magazines on your coffee table, all gloss and zero substance, GO and watch Magnolia and see how a long film that's slow should be made a film that holds your attention.
Some of it might not be astronomically correct , and the premise that a mechanistic universe wants to wipe out life as an aberration is probably falsifiable here as there should be nothing directing the decision , obviously , but this fiml stays with me since I first saw it when it came out ,.
For me , this is LVT's greatest film , so far , though there are arguments to be made for the others. The ending , though grim , is at the same time uplifting , and after a bad day I find the film makes things right Lars von Trier - in my view - joins that distinguished list of very overrated film directors, together with John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, and Tim Burton.
I do not mean that they necessarily are bad directors nor that I dislike the films they make: what I do mean is that they do not deserve the acclaim they receive from their devotees, and Lars von Trier certainly has his fanatical following.
The first aspect of Lars von Trier is that everything seem contrived: not just his films but his behaviour seems to be contrived specifically to attract publicity.
But let us consider Melancholia, which is one part of a trilogy. The film is about is dysfunctional family and at the same time is a rather poor science fiction story about a planet on course to collide with the Earth.
The film is divided into three parts: the first short part consists of a series of over arty, slow motion shots; the second part is about Justine's wedding reception in her sister, Clare's grand house; in the third part we see Justine living with Claire and her husband as the rogue planet heads on its collision course.
The second part is tediously long with annoying wobbly hand held camera shots: or perhaps I'm a philistine and that's art!
There's lots of mumbling and over loud music. Justine is ill and initially I thought she was suffering from a neurological condition but no - it's depression.
There is lots of argument between members of the family and Justine hesitates about consummating her marriage, has sex with some lad, and runs away.
