A great adventure film that showcases many forms of martial arts. The production design and surprisingly strong character development help keep the viewer invested.
They don't make them like this anymore. A must for Van Damme fans. This is a fun movie. It has defects but there is an underlying theme of loyalty, honor, promises made and kept, perseverance, and flawed human character.
All the personalities were perfect for their part. I enjoyed seeing Roger Moore as the fallen aristocrat clinging to the last vestiges of dignity.
Basically another bloodsport but a bit more modernized but rather cool overall. Van Damme is on a quest to find the meaning of right and wrong in this movie.
He battles in a tournament of martial arts to win the prize of a golden statue, which funds he can use to feed the street kids that he cares for.
Formidable opponents square off in this movie from every country and Van Damme learns from the famous boxer, who teaches him how to stand up for what he believes is right and encourages him to win.
The movie does have good scenes of martial arts, but they are usually short and the real appeal of this movie is watching Van Damme's character being transformed as he battles within himself to steal a statue or to win it, to fight in a tournament or to give up, to betray his friends or to do what seems right.
Good movie and with even better fights could've made 5 stars. Although short fights and not such a great cinematography are what drags this movie down, some of the fights are great - wish they were longer though!
My favourite one is when Chinese guy fights with a Brazilian martial artist. They are well matched and overall are excellent fighters.

A film centring around a martial arts knock out contest, it features some big, brawny men, all sweaty and greased up with Trex, leaping about as if they've had to much strong coffee and pummelling each other into defeat.
The fights are very well choreographed and come across very well indeed. On the whole, very entertaining. Should watch. It is very similar to the style of BloodSport which is a good thing.
The story is a bit different and enjoyable. I am a big fan of Peter Malota which is the guy that plays the fighter from Spain that fights Van Damme.
In real life he is a close friend of Van Damme and has helped immensely during his career on the fighting choreography of his movies.
On blu ray the movie is more than decent on quality of picture. Sometimes it looks great but at times it is average I can't explain why. The movie itself is great and should be bought no doubt about that.

If you want to see a good video game based film, watch Mortal Kombat instead. And what the hell was up with those guys playing Ryu and Ken.
