Nov 24, An interesting mystery with a good cast, The River King though has a good story, at times it leaves a lot to be desired and the scripts limitations doesn't make this film great like it's supposed to.
The film is entertaining, and the story is engaging, but the film could also have been a lot better. As a whole, The River King is a good film that has a concept for a story, and for most of the film, it's engaging, and entertaining.
However there are things that could have been done better. Luckily the cast keep this film from being awful, and the performances here save this film from being a dud.

Edit Storyline Abel Grey is sent to investigate the death of a boy from an exclusive local school, who is found floating in the river.
Edit Did You Know? Trivia At the end of the film, Abel's father, Ernest, recalls how Abel's brother had hugged him the day that he committed suicide.
Ernest then remarks that he found it strange because it wasn't Frank's way. This dialogue is taken directly from a scene where Abel is talking to his mother rather than his father.

One was, that I'm a sucker for a good suspense mystery, the second reason was the presence of Jennifer Ehle, and the third was that of Ed Burns.
From then on it becomes the goal of detectives,one of whom is Abel, played by Ed Burns, to discover how this boy died. The proximity of the body to an exclusive private shool and the discovery of the dead boys school scarf in the snow nearby, lead police to the school to identify the victim and to trace his last days on earth.
They discover a clandestine secret society which involves an induction organized by the older boys - known today as hazing. So what happened to the victim?
How did he die? Whilst Abel suspects hazing to be the cause of death he is inexplicably warned off the idea by his Boss,his partner, and also by the schools head master, who want the matter closed and for suicide to be recorded as the cause of death.
Ed Burns, the one constant character throughout this story, was first rate as Abel Gray,Jennifer Ehle plays a teacher who teaches English and Photography and is sympathetic to Abel's opinons, is not as effective as she was in Pride and Prejudice.
Her American accent is wonky despite her being half American,and I felt her talent should have been put to better use in the River King than was the case.
The teacher is asked to photograph the dead boys room in the absence of a police photographer and notices a shadowy figure appearing on the photographs she has taken.
And Abel keeps seeing a small boy in a blue windsheeter who vanishes from view whenever approached, only to reappear at other locations. These apparitions are explained in due course as Abel and his ageing father face up to their own great loss - the suicide of Abel's older brother many years before.
I found the River King to be a haunting, beautiful and engaging story, and the snow covered landscape of New England to be a perfect backdrop for such a mystery driven film.
The photography was perfect,catching the beauty and solitude of the snow fields,and Nick Willing has stamped himself as a director to watch for in the future, his career still being in it's infancy when River King was made.
A joyful experience, a fil that deserves more kudos, it's deserving place in the sun. Being an avid fan of Jennifer Ehle and having seen her in many excellent dramas, I was looking forward to watching this.
I was very disappointed with this film. The plot meandered so much, exploring many possibilities for the kids death and none were explored enough in depth - was this a supernatural thriller or not?
There was not nearly enough suspense to keep you interested and I was left wondering what the whole film was about!
Even Jennifer's acting did not measure up to her usual standards in this - her accent was weird and the love story was completely bizarre!

If you enjoy an average mystery film, then this is a good film to watch, but if you're expecting something elaborate, you won't find it here.
There are some good ideas at work here, but they never quite get off the ground. Edward Burns delivers a good performance as the cop investigating the suicide of a student at a prep school.
Though not a perfect film, The River King has enough good elements to make it an entertaining, if somewhat uneven. I enjoyed the film that it was a good little film, but also thought there was room for improvement.
If you enjoy average mystery films, then The River King is the film to see. Entertaining, but flawed. The performances at least were worthwhile.
Overall The River King is a good film, but could have been done better, but at least there are far worst films out there.

Edward Burns is great as Abel Gray, leading a young, unknown cast, with his emotionless persona. He makes the perfect cop, because of this stiff, focused personality.
The story was strong, often throwing you off the track you are on, and using flashbacks to tell the background story. The music, montages, and flashbacks throughout the movie help to tell the story of the school, people, and town, almost as much the dialogue does.
A pictures says words, in The River King, many obscure actions and random things have their own words and that helps make it unique.

But I took a chance on it, and I'm glad I did. If I could give this movie 4. I had to deduct a half-star for the stereotypical representation of boys at a private school, and the school's stereotypical influence on the town.
But other characters, and the dilemmas they wrestled with, were so well drawn, especially Abel's father in a minor but important role. This film recognizes that concepts like reality, truth, right vs.
And they don't all come wrapped up in a pretty package with a bow on top at the end of the story. I was left with some unanswered questions The most important question I am still pondering is "What would I have done?
If you like movies, with witless cops, working on a murder, well, you will love this one. The plot was poor, acting terrible, week all the way throught!
Writing, directing, pacing, acting, photography. There's nothing here. Thoughtful, but not exciting. Folks who want an edge-of-the-seat, action, twisted, exciting thriller should move on.
There is one good actress. One apparently handsome cop with integrity. It does not seem to have a lot of substance, yet it seems to have tried.
There are interesting character decisions toward the end which are rather original and which show an unusual sensitivity and thoughtfulness toward the grieving which is worth remembering.
That was why I gave this film 3 stars, not 2: It gave me something to carry on with in Life, and films don't often seem to do much of that these days.
It is not a thriller. It is a sad drama some will appreciate despite being slow moving. There was nothing thrilling about this movie. It crawled along with underdeveloped characters and hollow relationships.
The storyline employed numerous tired stereotypes like the superficial prep school kids, the snobby overly-intellectual faculty, the melodramatic teenage girl, the self-righteous "good cop" and the "bad cops" who take bribes and look the other way.
Edward Burns reprised his role as the broody male lead and his relationship with Jennifer Anne Ehle's somewhat socially inept character completely lacked chemistry.
The plot seemed to half-heartedly try for some sort of supernatural element, but gave up so quickly it appeared to be stuck in the movie as an poorly conceived after thought.
I don't think my expectations were really high going in, but this movie was definitely a disappointment. One person found this helpful. I kept wanting "The River King" to pick up the pace and be a little more intense.
Then I realized it's one of those films that doesn"t need to use suspense to keep you guessing. Everything happens in the dead of winter in a supposedly "upscale" college in a small town.
Edward Burns is the introspective good guy cop who doesn't accept suicide as the cause of a young man's death.
The more he finds out, the more he believes it's a murder by drowning. There's no reason to give any further details about the story because there are some twists and turns, and at times we don't know who to trust.
But that's what makes a good mystery, and I don't like to know too much ahead of time, so no more storyline from me! The acting is mostly pretty good.
Edward Burns is quite believeable as a good guy cop who seems to have some personal issues of his own. The many other cast members seem to follow the director's guidance: no hysterics, just keep it low-key.
The photography captures the icy cold of the frozen environment, and there are some nice visuals that suggest it's time to get some hot coffee.
All in all, if you take it for what it is, and don't expect some heart-pounding action, then this would be a good film to watch.
I was impressed with the way "The River King" wound down, and I didn't feel cheated or disappointed.
Again, the key to enjoying it is to take is for what it is: a quiet story that is slow, but not boring. Nothing seemed to gel but the movie still deserved a look-see.
