The Muppet Show Compilations - Episode 12: Scooter's cold openings (Season 4)
An alternate exterior is also shown in the book. Locations seen in the Muppet Theater include backstage right which includes Kermit's desk , the dressing rooms, the attic featured in four compilation videos released in , the canteen, the prop room, the stage, Statler and Waldorf's box, the auditorium, reception, the recording studio, the stage door lobby, and the back alley.
Scooter's uncle J. Grosse owns the theatre, and rents it to the Muppets. This would have taken place some time after , as J.
The Muppets reunite in hopes of raising enough money to buy the theatre from oil magnate Tex Richman before he can demolish it and start drilling for oil on the site.
Many of the characters who appeared on The Muppet Show have appeared in previous and subsequent Muppet productions. Additionally, several guest stars from the series had cameos in one of the first three Muppet theatrical films.
Originally, the producers had to call on their personal contacts to appeal to them to appear, especially considering that doing so required an overseas trip to Britain.
However, the situation changed when the renowned ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev offered to appear; his performance on this unusual TV program produced so much favourable publicity that the series became one of the most sought after for various celebrities to appear in.
Sayer's show used his hit " The Show Must Go On ": he changed the lyrics in the second verse slightly, from "I wish I could tear down the walls of this theatre" to "I wish I could tear down the walls of this Muppet theater".
Some guest stars, such as Monty Python star John Cleese , co-wrote much of their own episode. Mark Hamill appeared in one episode as both himself and Luke Skywalker , his role in the Star Wars film series.
A guest appearance by Peter Sellers —who chose not to appear as himself, instead appearing in a variety of costumes and accents—earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Continuing or Single Performance by a Supporting Actor in Variety or Music.
An early tradition was to present the guest star with a Muppet likeness of themselves as a parting gift at the end of the show, but this only lasted for the first two episodes produced, featuring Connie Stevens and Juliet Prowse.
The high cost and effort of creating these unique Muppets, scheduling conflicts, and potential legal issues contributed to the decline of this practice, although Muppet caricatures and parodies would continue to appear.
Ten videos were released, featuring original linking material in addition to clips from the show.
Unlike the Playhouse Video releases, It's the Muppets and The Very Best of The Muppet Show did not include any original footage or guest star clips, but all compilation collections did include material cut from the original US broadcasts.
Both episodes were edited. In addition to replacing the first series opening and the ending logos with Zoot, the Vincent Price episode was edited to remove the songs " I'm Looking Through You " and " You've Got a Friend " the latter of which would be cut again when released on the first series DVD as well as a sketch with the talking houses, while the Alice Cooper episode removed Robin's performance of " Somewhere Over the Rainbow ".
Unique to each episode was an introduction by Jim Henson's son, Brian. Nine more volumes were added for , the Muppets' 25th anniversary.
The rights to the episodes and characters used in The Muppet Show , and subsequent film outings, were bought in February by The Walt Disney Company.
Several songs were cut from the series 1 DVD release due to music licensing issues. There have also been some cuts in the intro sequence, and backstage scenes leading up to these songs.
However, episodes that used Disney music remained unaltered for example, episode 14 of series 1 used " Never Smile at a Crocodile " from Peter Pan.
However, the intro and end credit sequences on this release are in German. This scene does appear albeit slightly abridged in the international release.

This show is my childhood! I love you!! I won't go much into the episodes themselves since there are plenty of episode lists for you already.
Suffice it to say there are some gems on this DVD. Also the extras are delightful. The episodes look very clean and the audio is well balanced.
I don't recall whether or not the show was remastered for this DVD set, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest. It really looks like you are watching the shows for the time in all their pristine glory.
This being the first season you will notice a few differences to the later seasons like how Fozzy Bear and Miss Piggy look and how Janice and some other characters sound.
I kinda like seeing the earlier processes and how they evolve later on. Also there seems to be more of an irreverent charm in these episodes as well then again I think the Muppets have always been like that.
If you ever watched the Muppets you know that while you get some great comedy and wit most of the time there are those moments that seem dry.
Considering these eps were done in the mid's that dryness might show up even more with dated material. The episodes are great and I'm very happy to own them, but the extras you get really stand out as something really special and entertaining too.
My personal favorite is the pitch reel Jim Henson used to sell the show to the TV executives. It's a riot! It shows just how clever and daring the show can be.
The reel even takes jabs at the very execs Henson is trying to win over. The pilot episode is another treat as well. I like the differences between the pilot and actual show like Kermit having a cameo appearance instead of being the host and how Sam the Eagle had a bigger and more laid back role in the show.
The other extras are great as well. There is a "gag" reel that seems more like commercial spots for early episodes, but their are fun to watch anyway.
The Fun Facts is essentially a subtitle track with an occasional splash of Kermit on the screen you can have play on the episodes that give you TONS of information about the show, the current episode, and more.
The Fun Facts are as informative and interesting as the best director or cast commentaries you can come up with from any DVD anywhere. It's that good.
I don't think it's actual felt but it's a really neat design none the less. It's a neat design, however getting at disk 2 or 4 means you have to take out disk 1 or 3 to get to them.
Small price to pay for a space-saving design. Here's the deal. You get a lot of good content for the price. The quality of this DVD set is excellent.
It definitely beats out those "Best of The Muppets" DVDs we have had to endure all this time incomplete, lacking extras, etc.
You like the Muppets? You'll thank me for it. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Kermit tries to run a variety act. There's literally no plot to The Muppet Show.
Just The Muppets causing mayhem with a different variety act and different guest stars with each episode. A lot of the guest stars here are long forgotten and the big names would come later once the series hits it big though highlights include episodes starring Peter Ustinov, Bruce Forsyth, Vincent Price and Twiggy but this is sheer comedy genius.
Some Muppets look very different compared to how they look now, Miss Piggy and Gonzo's look might shock and you can sometimes see the strings but this classic 70's series is how The Muppets started out and is a joy to watch.
One of the all time great children's shows and comedy shows. One person found this helpful. Unlike other reviewers, who seem to be die hard fans and have an encyclopaedic knowledge of whether you will get the episodes in the right order etc, which is all good stuff to know if you want that kind of thing, all I remember is that when I was a child I used to sit in front of the television on a Sunday night desperate for the muppets to start.
I loved it. It was funny, the characters were great, and my parents liked it because it had that classic quality of a great kids television show, in that the humour worked on many levels.
My children are now of an age to enjoy the muppets and I ordered this with great trepidation thinking like many other things from my childhood, it might not live up to expectation.
Thankfully it does. It really does. I still love it, and now my kids love it too. Our particular favourite sketch has got to be the classic Mnah, Mnah, which still had me falling about after all these years.
It is still fresh, still original and still highly entertaining. The kids and I have a lasting fondness for the wonderful figure of Gonzo, who gets perpetually blown up, and as an adult I now realise that Kermit isn't as boring as I used to think he was!
Great extras, lots of episodes to enjoy. A real treasure. After reading Jim Henson's biography decided to return to the original Muppet shows from my childhood , watching them now the humour is very hit and miss but every minute is still a joy to watch and can now appreciate the skill and hard work that went into each show.
You will learn to love characters you didn't before and enjoy the guests stars some long forgotten..
Stadler and Waldorf in the viewing box are constantly hilarious and cutting and each Muppet really has it's own personality and feelings.
I have bought all 3 seasons and wait patiently for the release of Seasons 4 and The special features are somewhat limited, making of documentaries would have been great, but you do get Muppet morsels which when chosen has snippets of interesting facts as you watch it happen on screen.
Also if you have younger children like me that are now into Muppets because of the new films then they may enjoy seeing where it started.
Apparently this German DVD set is the only place you can get the Vincent Price uncut episode running time over 25 minutes with optional English soundtrack, though picture quality is slightly lower than the cut episode in the UK Disney DVD set.
Corny but ideal entertainment for the kids with an eclectic array of guest stars from the 70s. Great stuff. Pages with related products.

Verified Purchase. What can I say the Muppets. I like that it has a special feature where when you're playing the movie you can have it where captions come on during the scenes that tells you fun facts about that scene and about the show without being too interruptive..
I love this my kids love it too. Our five year old loves the music, the jokes, the kindness and the joy of these classic Muppets episodes.
From beautiful dance numbers with puppets to boisterous comical moments, he laughs and wonders throughout our screening.
I love sharing my memories with him! I grew up watching "The Muppet Show". It doesn't get any better than this!! I bought this for my nephew so he would know what "Real TV" is.
I still laugh out loud watching this show. Jim Henson was a genius. I used to watch the Muppet Show without fail I was an adult - sort of. It also reminded my of the passage of time as most if not all of the guest appearances are by performers who are no longer with us.
Upside is that I got to see these wonderful people in their prime and how much joy they brought to the world of entertainment.
So if you would like to take a trip down to an earlier time in your life to see some of your favorite but wonderful "adult" muppet characters plus the performers who made entertainment history as you would like to remember them, I recommend this set.
Like the show itself, the shows on these sets of DVDs improve as they move forward chronologically, primarily because as the show became more popular, it was able to attract better guest stars.
Thus, the shows from Season 3 are better than those from Season 1. I always loved the Muppet Show, so it was really gratifying to share them with my 5 year old son.
Very interesting to watch his reaction. It is such a different kind of show than the cartoons and Disney flicks he otherwise watches.
The skits have a lot of high brow references and it is kind of old fashioned, but the classics like Kermit, the Swedish Chef, Pigs in Space, all still work.
