Il nuovo arrivato biasima di fatto il machismo fascista del suo collega, il poliziotto di Alexis Manenti Chris , interprete e co-sceneggiatore del film.
Ly ne fa dei personaggi di fiction complessi che abitano lo stesso quartiere di quelli che sorvegliano e si ritrovano la sera negli stessi interni privi di qualsiasi lusso.
Confrontato con tutti i mali delle banlieue, Damien Bonnard interpreta un piccolo personaggio che acquista progressivamente spessore fino a imporsi con la sua presenza lunare.
Ma I Miserabili di Ladj Ly , il regista parigino attento alle tematiche dei movimenti, delle rivolte e delle rivendicazioni non racconta da storia di Jean Valjean.
E non sta solo nei grandi principi, nei corsi e ricorsi della vicenda umana. Soffrono, cercano di reagire, si ribellano.
Assumo il film come segnale del carattere, della vocazione dei francesi a ribellarsi e a lottare. E ottengono un risultato. Nel il popolo scende in piazza ed espelle Re Carlo X.
Nel il popolo si ribella a un governo che ha perso, colpevolmente, la guerra con la Prussia. Infine i gilets jaunes, gente che non molla, che contrasta la politica e la costringe a cedere.
Tentativo fallito. Hugo fu animatore del Comitato di resistenza repubblicana, in un tentativo, abortito, di sollevare il popolo parigino.
Ci sono solo cattivi coltivatori. E i miserabili ci sono sempre. Le gang si sfidano a suon di minacce e giochi di sguardi degni di un western contemporaneo.
Un film sulle banlieu fatto per la prima volta da uno delle banlieu. Sono due i momenti che ci sollevano letteralmente su questo melting pot confusionario e sempre urlato, come se il regista ci volesse regalare una coscienza sulla storia: la sequenza iniziale del film con il tifo che accomuna tutti, che vorrebbe accomunare tutti sotto lo stesso tricolore e sotto lo stesso simbolo della Tour Eiffel.
Come quel tifo che i primi minuti del film fanno sognare. Non ci sono buoni e cattivi in questo dramma contemporaneo, ma solo una situazione che sembra autogenerarsi per le condizioni socio-economiche.
Prima scena: nelle piazze di Parigi sventolano le bandiere tricolori e i cittadini - bianchi, neri e arabi - cantano tutti assieme a squarciagola la Marsigliese.
Ogni tanto succede. Entriamo in un film convinti di trovarci su un terreno familiare, ma poco a poco perdiamo ogni riferimento. Premio della giuria a Cannes, questo film formidabile in sala dal 12 espugna il genere a cui appartiene per farne qualcosa di radicalmente nuovo.
Mai visto le banlieue parigine filmate con tanto amore e tanta spietatezza. Una giornata di un nuovo poliziotto nei dintorni di Parigi, a Montfermeil.

Le vertiginose immagini di apertura di I miserabili raccontano una Parigi - e una Francia - esplosive e frenetiche. La folla festante e unita non conosce barriere: celebra la vittoria della Coppa del Mondo contro la Croazia.

Un occhio volante sopra il quartiere di Les Bosquets che guarda la polizia. Basta una scintilla, un' unica, imprevedibile scintilla. Nella folla che grida, piange e ride, bianchi, neri e arabi, e tante vie di mezzo, figli di incroci etnici, culturali e religiosi.
I prossimi capitoli, sui quali sta lavorando, andranno indietro nel tempo. Ma chi sono oggi "i miserabili"?
Sono i figli delle rivolte di Parigi negli anni Duemila, che vivono ancora nelle banlieue raccontate nel da Mathieu Kassovitz in L'odio.

The film still is worth a look for this, but it is a shame that it peaks so early and only seems to slip away from there. It manages to feel overlong while also feeling rushed and needing more time; perhaps me not naturally being drawn to musicals was part of the issue, but it is a flawed but expensive film.

The decision changes their lives forever. The film, set in the commune of Montfermeil in the aftermath of the FIFA World Cup , is based on a real-life occurrence of police violence which took place in the city on 14 October , [2] and was observed and filmed by Ly.
The story follows several characters within the commune, as a theft from a teenager spirals into the threat of a large crisis. The film's title is a reference to the Victor Hugo novel of the same name , written in Montfermeil and partially set in it; in the novel, Montfermeil is also the setting of the meeting of Jean Valjean and Cosette , a girl abused by her adoptive parents.
The film depicts abuses against poor citizens, especially teenagers of sub-Saharan African or Maghrebi ethnicities, thus stressing the continuity in the fate of the poor in Montfermeil.
Among other honors, it was selected as the French entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards , eventually achieving the nomination.
Meanwhile, Issa, a known juvenile delinquent , steals Johnny, a lion cub, from a circus, causing its owner Zorro to go to a man known as "the Mayor" and threaten to return with firearms if Johnny is not returned.
Chris and his squadron are tasked with finding and retrieving the cub. One of Issa's friends takes a picture of Issa with the cub and posts it on Instagram , leading Chris to find out that Issa is the culprit.
They chase, capture and handcuff him, but he claims that the cub had run away. Issa's friends then attack the three officers, throwing things at them to stop them from taking Issa in.
When Issa tries to run away, Gwada, having accidentally teargassed himself during the chase, shoots him in the face with a flash-ball.
Issa's friends scatter, but the squadron realize that they have been filmed by a drone, which escapes. The trio arrive at a local neighborhood contact of Chris, leaving Issa in their care and using information given to them by that contact to find Buzz, the teenager the drone belongs to, forcing him to flee before he can upload the video.
Buzz, who still carries the drone's memory card, escapes the squadron and takes shelter with Salah, a restaurant owner and key member of the local Islamic community.
Both the squadron and the Mayor, having found out, arrive at Salah's restaurant. After a tense confrontation during which Chris attempts to illegally arrest Buzz, Ruiz convinces Salah to give him the memory card, claiming that Issa's shooting was just an accident.
After recovering Issa and the cub which happened to be spotted near them , the squadron takes the two to the circus. Deciding that Issa has learned his lesson, Chris drops him off and warns him not to tell anyone what happened, and, if asked about his injury, to say that he slipped and fell.
In the evening, the characters involved in that day's event seemingly return to their normal lives, some with visible signs of distress and doubt.
Issa, who had been told earlier that his father did not want him back home because of his behavior, sits alone on a ruined couch, traumatized. Later that night, Ruiz meets Gwada in a bar and tells him that he knows that a flash-ball cannot be fired by accident, and that Gwada had therefore intentionally shot Issa.
The next day, the squadron, while on patrol, get attacked by a small group led by Issa. They chase them, falling into Issa's trap and ending up assaulted by a much larger group of teenagers, leaving them trapped from all sides in a stairwell and fighting for their lives.
They also attack the Mayor's office, and end up clubbing him and throwing him down a set of stairs. There are only bad cultivators.
